2nd Annual Prom Dress Event

It's prom season again and S4TP is partnering with Tommy Hilfiger Corporation for our Second Annual Dress to Remember event providing teenage girls with dresses for their prom! Last year was a great success with over 200 dresses collected, over 100 girls in attendance, and about 90 dresses distributed in addition to countless shoes and accessories. This year we will be focusing on young women living in NYC shelters.

Prom season can be very expensive especially for those struggling to even get their most basic housing needs met. We know that while these young women have more significant life stressors to be concerned about, prom is an unforgettable and precious memory for every girl. We want to make sure that they have a dress and have one less barrier to attending their prom.

We are currently accepting donations for dresses and recruiting volunteers for the event. If you are interested in donating a dress please see the site locations and contact persons listed on the flyer. You may also sign up to volunteer as a personal shopper, merchandiser, greeter, or coorindator for the event by contacting l.woods@somethingforthepeople.org.

We hope you will consider helping us make this another event to remember. We can't do it without you!

S4TP Support the Red Pump Project! March 10th Y'all!

The Red Pump Project

If you don't know, now you know! Thursday, March 10th is National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness day. Check out the awesome initiative The Red Pump Project is taking to protect and empower women and girls around HIV prevention and education.

http://www.theredpumpproject.org/

Here are some stats from their site on behalf of the CDC and Kaisser Foundation!

Did you know...
■There are approximately 1.1 million people living with HIV/AIDS in the U.S. & almost 280,000 are women
■In 2006, there were 15,000 new HIV infections and 9,801 AIDS cases diagnosed among women
■The only diseases causing more deaths of women are cancer and heart disease
■HIV is the leading cause of death for Black women (including African American women) aged 25–34 years.

In acknowlegement and support of the Red Pump Project S4TP plans to rock our red pumps too! We hope that you will do the same. More importantly, if you cannot rock red pumps make sure you do something in observance of the fight against HIV: educate yourself, your sister or your girlfriends, get tested, restock on condoms, learn how to use a female condom, have a conversation with your partner. Take any step that you feel is necessary to help raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and its impact on women!

A Dress To Remember

Every girl dreams of her prom night and no dream is complete without the perfect dress. It is a occassion that girls will remember forever. Thanks to a great opportunity and partnership with Tommy Hilfiger and local schools, Something For The People was able to host a very special event "A Dress To Remember". Preparations began in February with collecting gently used dresses and shoes from friends, collegues and family. We outreached schools and guidance counselors throughout the Bronx, Manhattan, and Brooklyn to recruit young women who were in need of a prom dress. The response was staggering. We collected over 200 dresses!!! The event was a true success with 81 girls attending and 72 receiving the perfect prom dress. There are no words to describe the joy and greatitude expressed by these young women. We are happy to have had the opporunity to host the event and be a part of such a special moment in time for these young women. We are so grateful for every volunteer and dress donor who made the event so special. Special thanks to the staff at Tommy Hilfiger especially Betsey for your her dedication and support. We are foever grateful. The event was a launching pad for our Loving the Skin I'm in campaign which seeks to empower young women to celebrate their beauty and practice self-love.

Something for the People Walks For Haiti

In an effort to further support relief initiatives in Haiti, Something For The People raised $530 and participated in The Walk for Haiti. The 5k walk took place April 3, 2010 in Flushing Meadows Park in Queens, New York. Something For The People's executive team braved a brisk early Saturday morning and proudly walked for Haiti. The event was truly empowering and fun! We hope to keep the Haitian relief initiatives alive within Something For The People's developments and will continue to support the cause. We must all remember that the it not only takes pledges and promises, but perserverance and persistence to rebuild Haiti. One day at a time and one step at a time...
